A standard structure used by the PRR to protect
employees working as Watchmen, Crossing Guards,
Bridge and Switch Tenders from the elements.
C. 1911 to the 1960's

BACKGROUND

The major railroads did a lot of running in cities, and had numerous crossings that needed protection. Watchman's shanties were very common up until the 1960's. Similar structures were used by Bridge Tenders and Switch Tenders, to protect the workmen from the elements. The PRR called its structure a Watch Box, and this one is modeled upon the PRR standard plan #59329, issued Dec. 1911. Generally constructed of wood, in a board and batten configuration, with a roof of "Ruberoid" asphalt bitumen sheeting, likewise having battens on it to hold the shingles or tarpaper down. The standard plan calls for 2 windows, with a note that a rear window could also be placed, when necessary. Most appear to have been placed with the door facing the track. Inside was a small stove for warmth.
