Mesaba

Port City Car Co. is pleased to make these Mesaba cars for your pleasure.

Mesaba 10 Mesaba 14 Mesaba Boxmotor

There are two coaches, and an express motor (freight or box motor), and we think you will enjoy them all.

The Mesaba cars in this series were started a year (or more) ago by Matt Austin of Australia, and the files were entrusted to Tim Muir’s Pacific Traction Works and the folks at Port City Car Company. Tim did a remarkable job of re-building Matt’s work, Bill Hall created a new cab view, Paul DeVerter adjusted the lighting, created a motorman for the #10, and took care of the final testing and text (readme) work. We also got technical input from Dave Mewhinney, and the results are in the File Library.

The coaches have only one trolley pole, accurate for these cars, which were turned on a wye at the end of the run. The express motor has two poles, but only one pilot. Research indicates that this motor was also used as a snowplow, and our best guess is that the end without the pilot was the end that the plow was attached to. All the cars were heated with Baker hot water heaters, located in the motorman’s cab on the coaches, which was a coal stove that circulated hot water through pipes in the baseboards of the cars.

We have provided a series of additional folders with the coaches. This allows you to change the destination signs on the front of the coaches by simply copy/paste from the destination folder of your choice and overwrite the file that is the root (main) folder of the car. As an example, you can change the destination sign of the ME10 to Virginia by copying (not cut) the file meends.ace from the Virginia folder, and placing it in the ME10 folder, clicking OK to overwrite.

We recommend that if you already have a copy of a previously released version of the Mesaba #10, that you delete it to avoid conflict. We have not tested these new cars with the previously released versions. Also, it’s my understanding that the Mesaba Route either includes or requires a ME10 car, and we have not tested these new releases on an un-modified version of the Mesaba Route. I have operated these cars on my version of the Mesaba Route, and they operate just fine, but I have modified my version of the route.
