HISTORY:
When the Wehrmacht began to rearm, railway guns were high on the list of priorities. The major reason for the program was to develop super-artillery for extreme long-range bombardment. After many issues of massive size, a more conventional sized rail gun was designed in 1940, This was the Kanone5E.
It became the standard German rail gun. The barrel was 21.54m (71 ft) long and was mounted on a special cradle. The gun, familiarly known as
"Schlanke Berta" (Slim Berta), had a maximum range of 62km (38.5 miles) and could fire 8 to 15 225kg shells per hour.
Other references suggest the K5[E] was developed between 1934 and 1936 ,tested and brought into service 1936-40. It was the best railroad gun used by the German Army in WW2. 25 guns were built. It was nicknamed "Schlanke Berta". Two of the guns gained fame as the notorious "Anzio Express" or "Anzio Annie". One of the two is still in existence, on display outdoors ,at the Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Maryland USA
SKINS
| Colors: Dark gray or red-brown camouflage and rust. | |
| Note: in the absence of good documents and color pictures, some initial liberties have been taken. We understand the Germans painted their WW2 armored trains using the same guidelines as for their Panzers. (see Armored train 205 in Czechoslovakia 1945. This armored train was used by the Czechs after the war without repainting beyond over painting the German crosses). If your planning to reskin these models, for what you believe is greater accuracy, please send us a copy for our files. - Thanks. |
