BACKGROUND:
As freight service began to grow, the Illinois Traction System turned to its Decatur Shops to augment its smaller locomotives and box motors with a home-built power solution. The first 6 were constructed in 1910 and were well received. Six more were constructed in 1914, and a further 6 in 1918. This is a model of the last one built, #1578. In addition to freight, and making up trains, the Class B locomotives were called upon to handle heavy passenger movements. The #1578 was chosen to haul a delegation of ITS officials to the Central Electric Railroad Association convention in Indianapolis in 1922. The loco was cleaned up and repainted for this duty. It, along with coach 531, Sleeper "Edwardsville", and Parlor-observation "Clinton" traveled to the convention and were put on public display. This model depicts the locomotive as it appeared for that service. PCCC is providing the entire train for that occasion. Further versions will be provided for later years, under the Illinois Terminal Railroad name, with appropriate changes in liveries and details, as reflected by such records as exist.
