Flatbed Ommr

German Railway Flatbed Typ Ommr (2 Axle)

Mine Activating Armoured Flatbed Car with wooden walls

References

I saw a new Polish book about German Armored Trains, covering the late war versions. I was fortunate enough to see some pictures about designs that were more or less categorized as field modifications. One of these pictures resembles a very small section of a Train that was obviously used to accompany other armored trains. It had a Flatbed being pulled by an Artillery wagon, and on top of that Flatbed a huge 88mm Flak sits ready to fire. You can find out more on our Artillery Wagon here.

DETAILS

This flat car consists of a basic Typ Omm chassis (2 Axle, 25 ton maximum loading, under 9 meters long) with low unarmored wooden sides. Often held a German Heavy Machine Gun Team (See picture series, below), or used for mine clearance. It was pushed ahead by the locomotive. Who wants THAT job...??? This accounts for the increased insulation on the floor and the wooden walls. It also had heavy armour skirting:

HISTORY

These cars came in great variety for military use in WW II. Moreover they could be converted into a number of other types for civilian use in peace time. However, most of them appear to have gone out of service shortly after the end of the war, as heavier models (such as the Ssy series) were seen as offering more flexibility. While a few may still be in service today,  it would be out of place in postwar consists.

Some liberties have been taken, and some innovation was necessary where there were few documents to guide us. The paint color is our best estimate. All the work was done from blue-prints and drawings.
