John Paul Jones
42" x 54 x 3", Oil on Canvas, Framed (Gold leaf on wood).
Based on the statement: "I've just begun to fight...." A famous scene from the British/American war. This is one of the most dramatic sea battles in modern history, and one which determined America's sovereignty in the western hemisphere. The viewer should focus on the fires below deck on the British ship in the foreground. This was a terrible event. These ships were wooden, oiled decks and filled with gun powder. This fire was likely only minutes underway. That's why the crew above deck seems oblivious to it. Such an event would cause the ship to sink within minutes with a terrible loss of life.
